Mysuru: With the Union Government removing minimum education qualification for obtaining Driving Licence (DL), Bharat Informal Workers Initiative (BHIWI) will organise DL drive at Dasara Exhibition Grounds in city on Sept.17.
BHIWI president and MLA S.A. Ramdas said that the initiative was being taken up in association with the Regional Transport Office. The RTO authorities will issue DL and LLR to eligible persons on the occasion. On Sept. 1, the Union government removed the minimum education qualification for obtaining driving licence.
Ramdas said that as per a survey as many as 67 lakh people across the country were driving vehicles without driving licence on account of the rider on possessing minimum education qualification for obtaining licence. As per the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, those aspiring to obtain driving licence for heavy vehicles should have at least passed class 8. Now, no education qualification is required to obtain DL. Ramdas said, BHIWI had organised several campaigns in Srinagar, Delhi, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka demanding the Union government to remove the condition of education qualification.
Deputy Chief Minister, also Transport Minister Laxman Savadi will inaugurate the drive at 12 noon on Sept.17. District Minister V. Somanna, MP Pratap Simha, Mayor Pushpalatha Jagannath and Managing Trustee of the Adamya Chetana Foundation, Tejaswini Ananth Kumar and others will be present.
