Cop killed as tipper topples on Police vehicle

April 27, 2021

Nanjangud: A driver of the Police Interceptor vehicle, was killed on the spot after an M-Sand laden tipper vehicle toppled on the Interceptor vehicle near Muddahalli Gate in the taluk yesterday evening.

The deceased is Siddarajanayaka (35), a resident of Chamalapura village in Saragur taluk. He leaves behind his wife Jyothi and a host of relatives and friends.

Siddarajanayaka, along with Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Shivakumar and others had come near Muddahalli Gate in the Interceptor vehicle, attached to Nanjangud Town Police Station and were involved in checking of vehicles. Siddarajanayaka had parked the Police vehicle on the roadside and was seated inside.

At about 6.30 pm, a speeding tipper vehicle, filled with M-Sand arrived on the road and the Police staff signalled the tipper driver to stop the vehicle. But the tipper driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, rammed it into the Interceptor and toppled resulting in M-Sand completely falling over the Interceptor and covering it. This resulted in Siddarajanayaka suffocating to death inside the Interceptor vehicle.

Though steps were taken to remove the M-Sand and rescue Siddaraju from inside the vehicle, the efforts went in vain. Later, an earth excavator was summoned to remove the fallen tipper to the side and though M-Sand was removed, Siddarajanayaka had breathed his last by then

As the mishap had taken place on the Main Road, traffic was disrupted for some time. Siddarajanayaka was serving in the Armed Reserve and was working as the driver of the Interceptor vehicle since a few years.

Additional SP Shivakumar, Dy.SP Govindaraju and Circle Inspector Lakshmikanth Talawar visited the spot. A case has been registered at Nanjangud Traffic Police Station and steps have been taken to arrest the tipper vehicle driver, who is absconding.
