Mysore/Mysuru: Dr. S.R. Savithri (64), former Director of All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), Mysuru, passed away at a private hospital in city this morning following prolonged illness. A resident of Prashanth Nagar in Bogadi, she leaves behind her husband, one son and a host of relatives and friends.
Last rites will be held at the foot of Chamundi Hill this evening, according to family sources.
Dr. Savithri, an alumnus of AIISH, served her alma mater as a teacher, lecturer, Professor and as Director.
Dr. S.R. Savithri’s passing is a uniquely sad loss to Speech Pathology, her area of research in which she authored four books and more than 100 peer-reviewed research articles. It is also a deep loss also to Indian philosophy for her expertise in Sanskrit; she held a second doctoral qualification in Navya-Nyaya. Her passing is a loss also to advocacy of linguistic diversity; she was recognized as “Rajbhasha Shree” at the Rajbhasha (Hindi) Seva Sansthan in 2016 in Mysore. Dr. Savithri was fluent or proficient in Kannada, English, Sanskrit, and Hindi, able to serve patients and issues of speech pathology in all of those languages. Dr. Savithri was a gentle and sensitive woman of a pleasant if cryptic sense of humor who touched the lives many students in her own gentle, caring, and creative way. Her passing is truly a unique loss to the charming city of Mysore and to India. She represented our city of Mysore uniquely and positively. May I respectfully ask MCC and MUDA to please consider committing (naming) the intersection of Bogadi Road and Ring Road to this remarkable Mysorean’s memory as “S.R. Savithri Vrittha” and “S.R.
