It is highly disturbing to note that a group of anti-social gangsters in Mysuru are specifically targeting senior citizens, as reported in detail by SOM, which has also rightly warned naive and law-abiding elders to be on their guard.

It is indeed a daunting challenge for seniors to fight against a rowdy, especially when caught completely unawares.

In this context, through your newspaper, I appeal to the Police Department to instil confidence among senior citizens by taking proactive measures.

Perhaps the Police can organise ward-wise meetings where people are briefed on lawful ways to counter such situations, issued tips and guidelines, and provided dedicated helpline numbers through pamphlets or newspaper publications.

The key message of such communication should emphasise that any such issue must mandatorily be resolved in the presence of the Police, either at a Police Station or with the intervention of a flying squad.

This could even take the form of a legal document serving as an immediate shield for senior citizens who may face such unfortunate situations until the culprits are apprehended.

In our Mysuru — long regarded as a peaceful paradise for retirees — it is a travesty that senior citizens now have to think twice before driving their modest, non-luxury cars, even for small household errands.

While the Police have demonstrated remarkable skill in solving far more complex crimes, this is an issue that surely can and must be resolved swiftly, bringing relief and reassurance to the city’s senior citizens.
