Aadikavi Pampa’s  Aadipurana Part-2: Vaachana-Vyaakhyaana and Exhibition from Dec.  2 to 9

Parampare,’ a cultural organisation known for presenting unique programmes on classical Kannada literary works has been conducting Vaachana-Vyaakhyaana of Aadikavi Pampa’s Aadipurana in city since Nov.25 at Nadabrahma Sangeetha Sabha on JLB Road. Prof. Hampa Nagarajaiah, internationally known scholar on Jain works, delivered the inaugural lecture. Suttur Seer Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji lauded the efforts of Parampare in popularising classical Kannada literature. Rare editions of Aadipurana and photos of scholars who contributed to the study of Pampa are exhibited at the venue. The exhibition will be open everyday from 5 pm. Replicas of a few paintings from Mahaapurana are also on display.

From Dec.2 to 7, the programme will be held at Nadabrahma Sangeetha Sabha on JLB Road and on Dec.8 and 9, at Jaganmohan Palace auditorium.

The Part-2 programme schedule is as follows:

Dec. 2 (Saturday) – 5.45 pm: Jina Bhajans –  M.V. Prabha Mani and Spoorthi Jain, Hassan.

Adi Tirthankara Charitam-3

Parinishkramana Kalyanam and Nilanjana Nritya marks the third stage of Adinatha’s life; Description of the most memorable event ‘the dance recital of Neelanjana’ under the behest of Indra, the abnegation of the world by Adinatha as a consequence of his witnessing the sudden death and disappearance of dancer Neelanjane and Indra replacing her with a mirror image.

6.30 pm to 8 pm: Vaachana – Dr. Jyothi Shankar, Mysuru; Vyakhyana – Prof. M.H. Krishnaiah.

Prof. Krishnaiah retired as Principal, after serving in various Government Colleges as Professor of Kannada. His chosen area of interest is Art and Literary Criticism. He was also the Hon.Editor of ‘Karnataka Kalavarthe.’ Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award, ‘Nadoja’ Award, Honorary Doctorate from the University of Hampi, 16 publications, 18 edited collections stand testimony to his achievements in the field of literature. In addition, he was the member of South Zone Cultural Centre in Tanjavur.

6.30 pm to 8 pm: Vaachana – Vid. Sandhya Ramesh and  Vid. Sudha Ratna, Bengaluru; Vyakhyana – Prof. P.V. Narayana.

Prof. Narayana, who retired as Principal from Vijaya College, Bengaluru, did his post graduation in Kannada from the University of Mysore, M.A in English from Karnatak University, Dharwad and Ph.D from the University of Bangalore. He has published 19 books, many of which have received prestigious awards. Kannada Book Authority has published his prose translation of Aadipurana. Prof. Narayana has also published the prose versions of Dharmamrita and Pampa Ramayana in Hosagannada. Among his 9 novels, Dharmakarana has won the Aryabhata Award.

Dec. 4 (Monday) – 5.45 pm: Jina Bhajans – Vidushi Sowmya Jain and Group, Mysuru.

Bharata Chakravarti Charitam- 1

Chakra Pooje, Vijaya Prasthanam, Punardigvijayam, Maagadha Darpadalanam, Dakshina Pashchima Uttara Bharata Vijayodyogam; Details of Aadinatha’s personal achievements and the power of his penance which results in the augmenting of the army of his son Bharata Chakravarti, acquisition of Chakra Ratna and the subsequent Digvijaya.

6.30 pm to 8 pm: Vaachana – Vid. N. Sreemathi, Bengaluru; Vyakhana – Prof. K.R. Ganesh.

Prof. Ganesh, who served in Acharya Paathashala, Bengaluru, for more than three decades, also taught Epigraphy in Kannada Sahitya Parishat for several years. Prof. Ganesh,  one of the few epigraphists in Karnataka, worked on “Kannada Inscriptions in Andhra Pradesh” for his doctoral degree. He currently teaches Classical Kannada poetry in Beeemshree Pratisthana, Bengaluru.

Dec. 5 (Tuesday) – 5.45 pm: Swasthishri Lakshmisena Bhattarakaru, Sri Kshetra Simhana Gadde Jain Mutt, Narasimharajapura, graces the occasion. Jina Bhajans – Vidushi Manjula Praveenkumar and Group, Saraguru.

Bharata Chakravarti Charitam- 2

Vrishabhadri Gamanam, Bharatavijaya Prashasti, Vidyadhara Bandhavyam, Kailasagamanam, Vrishabhanatha Stuti; The conquest of Shatkandas by emperor Bharata with the help of Chakra Ratna; His arrival at Vrishabhachala; Inscribing his victory by erasing the victory inscription of the Bharata’s arrival at Kailasagiri and singing paeans to Aadinatha.

6.30 pm to 8 pm: Vaachana – Vidushi Nirmala Prasanna; Vyakhyana – Dr. A.V. Prasanna.

Husband and wife duo Dr. Prasanna and Vid. Nirmala Prasanna have devoted themselves to the propagation of Gamaka in Karnataka.  Nirmala has accompanied several senior scholars in this endeavour and has won titles such as “Gamaka Sunaada Dhaarini,” “Gamaka Vaachana Kalaabhushana” in recognition of  her valuable contributions to Gamaka. Dr. Prasanna, a retired senior KAS Officer, is known for his scholarly Vyakhyana of  both old and medieval Kannada poetry. He has been writing a column entitled “Gamaka Saahitya” in the monthly Gamaka Sampada since 12 years. He has also been conducting a programme called “Gamaka  Saurabha” in Chandana TV for nearly a decade. He has been awarded the “Kumaravyasa Prashasti”  by the Government of Karnataka. Dr. Prasanna has been instrumental in setting up the Kumaravyasa Peetha in the University of  Tumkur and the installation of the idol of Kumaravyasa in Gadag.

Dec. 6 (Wednesday)-5.45 pm: Jina Bhajans – Students of Vidushi Vasanta Venkatesh, Mysuru.

Bharata Chakravarti  Charitam- 3

Chakragati Skhalanam, Bharata Bahubali Yuddham; Return of emperor Bharata to his kingdom after the conquest; Chakra Ratna stopping on its own at the entrance of Ayodhyapuri; The refusal to accept Bharata as the king by Bahubali and his other brothers; Conflict between Bharata and Bahubali leading to a war; Description of the war between the brothers.

6.30 pm to 8 pm: Vaachana – Gamaki Kru. Ramachandra, Mysuru and Suresh Rao Attur, Bhadravati; Vyakhyana – Dr. N.S. Taranath.

Dr. Taranath, retired Professor of Kuvempu Kannada Adhyayana Samsthe, is an expert in the metrical patterns of old Kannada Poetry and grammar. He is equally interested in the study of inscriptions. Known for his great oratorical skills, Dr. Taranath has earned fame specially for his interpretation of old Kannada Poetry.

Dec. 7 (Thursday) – 5.45 pm: Jina Bhajans – Vidushi Kusuma Jain, Tumakuru.

Bahubali Vairagyam, Saketaagamanam; The victory of Bahubali against Bharata in wrestling match, Bharata’s retaliation; despite Bahubali’s reverential conduct; Circumambulatory movement of the Chakra without causing harm to Bahubali; Bharata’s self-mortification; Bahubali’s regret and his decision to renounce the world and seek atonement through penance.

6.30 pm to 8 pm: Vaachana – Vidwan Ganesh Udupa, Hassan; Vyakhyana – Prof. Shantinatha Dibbada, Dharwad.

Prof. Shantinatha Dibbada, a retired Professor of Kannada from Karnatak University, is currently the co-ordinator of Aadikavi Pampa Adhyayana Peetha. His thesis on the Cultural Study of Pampa Bharata has won him great acclaim. His expertise ranges from Classical Kannada Literature to Jain Literature. Prof. Dibbada has authored several books on Jain Mythology and the study of Jain Culture which has earned him the prestigious Karnataka Rajyotsava Award, Kannada Sahitya Parishat Award, Gommatesha Vidya Peetha Prashasti from Shravanabelagola, Bahubali Kannada Literature Award from the Dakshin Bharat Jain Sabha.

Dec. 8 (Friday) – 5.45 pm: Jina Bhajans –  Atishaya Jain, Mysuru.

Swapna Darshanam, Aadi Tirthankara Parirvanam, Bharata Deekshagrahanam, Upasamharam; The enlightenment of Bharata and his profound regret for wronging his brother Bahubali; Bahubali’s resolve to tread the spiritual path; Giving up materialistic attachments.

6.30 pm to 8pm: Vaachana – Vid. Dharitri Anandarao; Vyakhyana – Dr. Jyoti Shankar.

Dr. Jyoti Shankar, senior faculty at KSOU, is an excellent orator and interpreter. She has composed several dance-dramas and has presented them before a discerning audience. Her creation “Kumaravyasana Kshatra Draupadi” brought her immense popularity. “Aadipurana Nritya Roopaka” is Dr. Jyoti Shankar’s innovative perspective on the magnum-opus of Pampa.

Dec. 9 (Saturday) – 6 pm: Aadipurana Nritya Roopaka combines all the important ‘Prasangas’ that appear in Pampa’s Aadipurana such as Lalitanga-Swayam Prabhe, Sreemathi Vajrajangha, Vrishabhanathana Janana-vairagya, Neelanjaneya Nritya, Bharata Bahubaliya Yuddha. This is the brainchild of Dr. Jyoti Shankar and Vidwan K. Sandesh Bhargav.

Vidwan K. Sandesh Bhargav is the Vice-President of ‘Jin Fact’ multinational company. He is a disciple of Vidwan Kannan and Dr. Vasundhara Doraswamy. He is the founder of Kala Sandesha Pratishthana through which he has trained and guided hundreds of students. He has been widely acclaimed for his one-man shows based on Kannada Poetry. More than 30 students of Guru Sandeh Bhargav are participating in the dance-drama.
