Mysore/Mysuru: MLC Dr. D. Thimmaiah has opined that being free from diseases alone is not a sign of good health, but being active physically, mentally and socially are the signs of real good health.
He was speaking after inaugurating World Health Day celebrations jointly organised by Uttishta Bharata Pratishtana and Himalaya Pratishtana at Namana Kala Mantap, Krishnamurthypuram, recently.
“World Health Organisation (WHO) has defined good health as being active physically, mentally and socially. We can feel ill-health physically, except for mental ill-health. Poverty, problems, unemployment, malnutrition are all signs of social ill-health,” he said. Observing that food which contains more sweet and salt is the root cause of bad health, he said that we have a practice of serving salt and pickles along with other food items.
”When the curry is salt and spicy, extra salt and pickle are not necessary. The habit of consuming additional salt and pickle will result in high BP. Overeating of ghee and sweets is also not good for health,” added the MLC.
“We all should exercise restraint in food consumption and should know what to eat, how much and when to eat. I am 75 years old and still walk daily for an hour and exercise for half-an-hour. I have no BP and sugar complaints. When we have control over our habits, we will have good health. Our health is in our control only. We must cultivate habits which promote good health,” said Dr. Thimmaiah.
Director of Rajashekar Hospital, Varuna, Dr. H.B. Rajashekar spoke about ‘Role of Lifestyle in Keeping Good Health.’ Prior to this, Doctors Dr. D. Thimmaiah, Dr. H.B. Rajashekar and Dr. Lakshmidevi were felicitated.
Mysuru District Kannada Sahitya Parishat President Maddikere Gopal, social worker Dr. K. Raghuram, Uttishta Bharata Secretary Ananth Saligrama, Convenor Rakesh Bhat, Cartoonist M.V. Nagendra Babu, Himalaya Pratishtana President N. Ananth and others were present.
