Mysore/Mysuru: Concerned over the rapid ecological degradation of Mysuru’s iconic Chamundi Hill, citizens and environmental groups have organised a Citizens’ Walk on Jan. 4, 2026, to draw attention to the growing impact of unchecked construction, traffic and commercial activity on the sacred Hill.
The walk will begin at 7.30 am from the Chamundi Hill footsteps near the JSS Mutt. Organisers have appealed to eco-warriors, senior citizens, environmental experts, educational institutions, artists and religious leaders to participate and support efforts to protect the Hill’s ecological balance and spiritual sanctity.
According to the organisers, Chamundi Hill — revered for its religious, ecological and geological significance — is under increasing pressure due to rising visitor numbers and infrastructure expansion, including the proposed works under the PRASHAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive) scheme.
They emphasised that any development on Hill must adhere to a conservation-first approach, supported by scientific studies. Environmental groups have pointed out that parts of the Hill have already witnessed slope failures in recent years, due to road widening, excavation, drainage alterations and unregulated construction. Severe plastic pollution remains another major concern, with large quantities of plastic waste — including bottles, bags and disposable offerings — accumulating on Hill.
Such waste, activists say, blocks drainage channels, reduces soil permeability and accelerates erosion, despite periodic clean-up drives. They have raised an alarm over illegal constructions and encroachments that have emerged without environmental clearances, thereby increasing built-up pressure on sensitive slopes and disrupting wildlife movement. In addition, untreated or partially treated sewage from existing facilities is said to be flowing into natural drains, contaminating soil and water bodies downhill.
