Cyber Crime: MGP to hold public meeting on Jan. 22

January 19, 2026

Mysore/Mysuru: While statistics based on the amount of money stolen may suggest that cyber crime declined between 2024 and 2025, the reality is far more troubling. The nature and sophistication of these crimes have not diminished — in fact, they have worsened and become more widespread.

Consider one recent case in Delhi: an elderly couple, both doctors who had returned from the US in 2015, were trapped in a “digital arrest” scam this year. Fraudsters confined them to their home for 16 days, convincing them they are under investigation for money laundering. By the time the victims realised the deception, they had lost nearly Rs. 14 crore. This chilling example highlights how elaborate and damaging cyber crimes have become.

Two years ago, Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) convened a meeting on cyber crime after receiving numerous complaints from Mysuru residents. Given the worsening situation, MGP is once again organising a public meeting to raise awareness at  MGP Office, Vivekananda Road, Yadavagiri,  on Jan.22 (Thursday) at  4 pm.

ACP Manoj Kumar, in-charge of Cyber Crime and Police Inspector Nandish Kumar will share real cases from Mysuru  and provide practical guidance on how citizens can protect themselves against such threats.

For effective utilisation of the meeting time, MGP has in a press release urged the citizens to e-mail their questions to: [email protected] by 11 am  on Jan.22.  For details  call Ph: 0821-2515150.
