Nanjangud: A couple, fed up with frequent fights over family issues, committed suicide by jumping into Rampura Canal near Himmavuhundi village on Friday.

The deceased are Basavaraju (35) and his wife Shobha (28), residents of Himmavuhundi village. While the body of Shobha was traced near Alathur village yesterday, search is on to trace the body of Basavaraju.

An agricultural labourer, Basavaraju had married Shobha 11 years back and the couple have a five-year-old son. 

Meanwhile, Chandra, Shobha’s brother, in his complaint to Nanjangud Rural Police has stated that there were differences in opinions between the couple, which used to lead to frequent fights between them.

He has further stated that on Friday last, the couple again indulged in a quarrel and Shobha jumped into Rampura Canal. Basavaraju, who came behind Shobha, also jumped into the canal.

ASP Shivakumar, Inspector Shivananjashetty and staff visited the spot, conducted mahazar besides registering a case. 

Police said that the body of Shobha was handed over to the family members after post-mortem.
