Fear of inundation still haunts Srirampura residents

June 12, 2019

Mysuru:  The residents of Srirampura Second Stage here get scared once the sky gets overcast coupled with thunder and lightning.

They do not have any phobias of rain but are still haunted by the nightmarish experience that shook them in October 2017, when the huge drain passing through the extension overflowed with gushing rain water flooding houses and spoiling consumer durables — about 150 houses were affected then.

The residents had staged a protest in the area. The then MUDA Chairman D. Dhruvakumar and the then MLA M.K. Somashekar had inspected the area, got the height of the drain increased by two feet or so to prevent overflowing of water. However, the augmentation stopped at that point with no continuation.

The drain near Srirampura Ring Road, which was quite wide earlier, has now become narrow due to encroachment. This is another reason for overflowing drain.

The drain does not extend beyond Manandavadi Road Bridge near Srirampura. A bit of soil was excavated to continue construction of the drain and left at that point. Due to the heavy silt deposit at that point, during heavy rains, water tends to flow back, overflow from the drain and inundate the houses nearby.

The residents say that they are yet to recover from the worst experience that occurred two years ago. The officials have not done the work properly giving room for one more catastrophe during the ensuing rainy days, they allege.
