Interactive talk at SBRR Mahajana First Grade College: Empowering women through health awareness, wellness

Mysore/Mysuru: In an endeavour to promote health awareness and empower women, the Department of Sciences, SPARSH, Women Empowerment and Internal Quality & Assessment Cell (IQAC) had jointly organised an interactive talk on ‘nutrition and your success: Let’s talk’ and ‘women health and hormonal regulation’ at SBRR Mahajana First Grade College, Jayalakshmipuram, recently.

Dr. Sushma Appaiah, Counsellor and Founder of Golz – Nutrition and Diet Solutions, Roopanagar, served as the resource person. The programme comprised two sessions catering to different segments of the audience.

Session 1: Exclusively for female students, focused on the theme of nutrition and success. Dr. Sushma addressed the young women, emphasising the importance of self-care and self-love through healthy nutrition practices. She discussed various aspects such as non-communicable and communicable diseases, lifestyle impacts and dietary patterns affecting health.

Additionally, she provided insights into managing obesity, underweight, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, hormonal imbalance, cancer, stress and nutrient deficiency diseases.

Dr. Sushma also shared strategies for stress management and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, drawing from global statistics on anxiety and depressive disorders among young adults. The session aimed to empower young women to make informed choices for their  well-being and success.

Session 2: Targeted teaching and non-teaching staff, focusing on gender sensitisation and holistic health. Dr. Sushma addressed common health issues faced by working men and women, including chronic backache, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, PCOS and thyroid disorders.

She highlighted the significance of balanced nutrition, providing guidance on dietary habits and addressing misconceptions. Moreover, she shed light on hormonal imbalance and regulation, emphasising the importance of self-care. The session encouraged dialogue and interaction between participants, fostering a supportive environment for health awareness and empowerment.

The workshop commenced with a prayer led by Priyanka Shenoy, Head, Dept. of Biotechnology and a welcome note by N. Spandana, Head, Dept. of Microbiology. The event was hosted by P. Radhika, Assistant Professor, Department of Biochemistry. Zuha, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, proposed a vote of thanks. Principal Dr. B.R. Jayakumari, IQAC coordinator D. Geeta, HoDs, staff and students were present.
