Book ‘Mageli amma mahlyam maka ishta’ released
Mysuru: Konkani writer Mamatha Kamath opined that only when a language is used extensively in literature will it help it grow.
She was speaking after the release of her Konkani translation of well-known Kannada littérateur Vasudendra’s book ‘Nammama andhre Nangishta’ titled, ‘Mageli amma mahlyam maka ishta,’ at Govinda Rao Memorial Hall here recently.
In all, 41 communities of three religions speak Konkani. “Because of the influence of the book ‘Nammama andhre Nangishta.’ I translated it into Konkani. This book has also bagged the Sahitya Akademi Award,” she said expressing her happiness.
Only when another language’s literary work is translated into one’s mother tongue can one find out how much hold one has over one’s language. In this Konkani translation of the book, without affecting the literary style of the Kannada version, it has been translated, she said.
“The original work’s straight talk, life’s truth, mother’s love and other emotions will attract everyone, which I have tried to capture in my language,” she said.
Gowda Saraswath Brahmin (GSB) Sabha President M. Jagannath Shenoy released the book. Mahesh Shenoy, Kusuma J. Shenoy, Mahesh Kamath, Manjunath Kamath and others were present. Guruprasad Hegde and Manisha Kamath compered.
