The news regarding the decision of the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) to finally enforce safety measures is indeed a welcome development. It comes after the tragic and untimely loss of four lives due to the negligence of the MCC staff.

There are numerous poorly constructed road humps scattered throughout Mysuru City, many of which are nothing more than vertical mounds of asphalted jelly stones masquerading as road humps. These humps not only fail to serve their purpose as speed-breakers but also pose a serious threat to both vehicles and passengers.

Accountability for these hazardous road conditions should begin with the contractors responsible for the road asphalting, as well as the field staff who overlook the inadequate construction. It should not be a challenging task to construct well-designed road humps with proper zebra stripes, yet the lethargic approach of Government staff in adhering to contract agreements perpetuates these dangers to the public.

Furthermore, the absence of reflectors on concrete dividers, particularly along high-traffic roads like KRS Road, poses additional risks to motorists.  Despite repeated concerns raised by readers of Star of Mysore, the Government’s inaction on this matter has been disappointing.

It is hoped that the MCC’s new-found commitment to safety will extend to ensuring that all road dividers are equipped with visible reflectors, thereby enhancing the safety of motorists. It is imperative that such measures are implemented promptly and effectively to prevent further tragedies caused by negligence and oversight.
