Mysuru: Lions West Sevaniketan School, Gokulam, has started a new initiative for children — The Joy of Giving. It aims to encourage students and parents of the school to inculcate practice at home by sharing a small quantity of a commodity to the people in need.
Children and parents were briefed about this initiative and the school requested every student to contribute a single onion or potato along with a small quantity of rice (about 100 grams) which is available at their houses, on the second Saturday of June month. The day was also a ‘No Bag and No Uniform day’ for children to participate in this initiative.
The school provided a zip lock cover for each student to carry their commodity to contribute to the society. Upon receiving student’s contribution, the same was placed in separate boxes in the auditorium. Onion or potato with rice was chosen as the contribution because these commodities are non-perishable.
This being the start of the initiative, approximately 130 kilos of rice, 60 kilos of potatoes and an equal quantity of onions were collected. These were neatly packed and given to an orphanage in JP Nagar by a few students accompanied by teachers.
School President Ln. K.S. Gururaja, who initiated this as a pioneer programme, felt if the same programme is started in other schools of the city, it will create an excellent service project.
