Sir,
This has reference to the recent news item advising owners of residences to disconnect rain water from terrace from joining the UGD line as the latter is not designed to handle excessive flow during rainy season and other consequences thereof.
VVWW has recently awakened to the fact of too small size of UGD pipes laid some 30-odd years ago. Now they have started laying new pipes by the side of the existing pipeline. It is so much to be appreciated.
While so doing, they are abandoning the old line totally after the new line is laid and giving house connections to the new line. This is sheer waste of public money already invested in the old line.
It is my suggestion to allow functioning of both the lines wherever possible by connecting all the house outlets on one side of the road to the old line and the outlets from houses on the other side of the road to the new line. This way the through flow in each line is kept well within their capacity for long decades to come. Also the clogging and overflow cases could be considerably reduced.
It may even be possible to handle rain water from terrace, which cannot be disconnected even under the threat of imposing fine etc. Hope the authorities concerned will consider this suggestion.
