June 27, 2024

Mysore/Mysuru: The city’s Fifth Additional District and Sessions Court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of killing his wife by setting her on fire.

The man, who was sentenced, is Swamy, a resident of Homaragala village in Nanjangud taluk. Swamy had married Siddarajamma, daughter of Siddarajashetty of Kestur village in Yalandur taluk. The couple had two children.

After marriage, the couple led a happy life for four to five years and later, Swamy began to assault his wife physically and mentally harass her, following which she came to her parents’ house. Swamy later went to his in-laws’ house and brought back his wife. But on Sept. 11, 2019, Swamy, suspecting that his wife was having an affair, picked up a fight, poured kerosene on her and had set her on fire.

Siddarajamma, who had sustained serious burn injuries, was admitted to K.R. Hospital in Mysuru where she succumbed to burn injuries at about 6 pm on Sept. 15. The then Inspector of Kavalande Police Station M.C. Rajashekar, who had registered a case, conducted investigation and had submitted a charge-sheet against Swamy to the Court.

Judge Gururaj Somakkalavar, who took up the case, heard the arguments from both sides, found the accused guilty of the crime and sentenced him to life imprisonment besides imposing a fine of Rs. 6,000.

Public Prosecutor B.E. Yogeshwara argued on behalf of the Government.
