‘Manipal Vriddara Maitri’ at Manipal Hospital hosts Senior Spelling Bee Season-4

September 25, 2025

Mysore/Mysuru: Of late, there has been a steady rise in cases with cognitive decline, dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases, particularly in the geriatric population.

Recognising this need, ‘Manipal Vriddara Maitri’ at Manipal Hospital, Mysuru, hosted the 4th Season of the Senior Spelling Bee Contest recently with the theme “Age is Just a Spelling, But Elderscence Can Make One Break a Sweat.”

More than 122 seniors participated, engaging in preliminary vocabulary rounds, word-building tasks and a lively Spell Bee finale. While the winner took home attractive prizes, all participants were given certificates.

The day included informative health talks on dementia, adult vaccination and geriatric care.

Dr. A.R. Maqsood Ahmed, Senior Consultant – Neurosurgery & Quiz Master, said: “Cognitive exercises like spelling contests serve as brain training drills. They help strengthen neural circuits, improve concentration and preserve memory. Just as we recommend physiotherapy for mobility, seniors should consider such activities a form of ‘mental physiotherapy’ for brain.”

“Preventive neurology is as much about lifestyle as it is about medicine. Engaging in structured cognitive challenges can reduce risk or slow the progression of conditions like dementia. Families must encourage seniors to stay intellectually active — it is a protective investment in long-term brain health,” said Dr. K.S. Venugopal Krishna, Senior Consultant – Neurology

“Dementia affects memory, thinking and behaviour. Early diagnosis can make a world of difference. Recognising the symptoms early and supporting individuals through their journey is crucial in ensuring better quality of life for both patients and their families,” said Dr. M.V. Sucharitha, Associate Consultant – Neurology.
