MHRD’s ‘Teach in India’ programme at SJCE

May 28, 2017

Mysuru: Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD), Government of India, has launched the “Global Initiative for Academic Networks” (GIAN) programme with an aim at tapping the talent pool of scientist and entrepreneurs of international repute to encourage their engagement with the institutes of higher education in India.

Fifty elite Indian Institutes including IIT, IISc and NITs have been selected under GIAN programme and JSS Science and Technology University’s SJCE is one among the three institutes from Karnataka. In all, ten GIAN programmes were sanctioned to SJCE and the tenth GIAN of Department of Biotechnology  on “Personalised Cancer Medicine” will be delivered by Prof. Sandeep Prabhu,  Professor of Immunology and Molecular Toxicology at The Pennsylvania State University, USA, from May 29 to June 10 at the college.

Overview of the programme: The type of cancer a person is suffering from – and how it gets treated – is no longer just about where in the body the cancer started.

The approach of doctors today has changed, from a traditional way to a more specific targeted way. Now they are equipped with a wealth of knowledge about the specific molecular and genetic makeup of their patient’s tumor.

The present day scientist and research groups have embraced this modern approach of personalised cancer care. Study and research in this direction is very much needed to speed up the progress of personalised medicine for all.

In this context, the present course is designed to equip the students with an in-depth knowledge of the molecular conformations which are responsible for cancer and the promise personalised medication proposes towards achieving a better life.

Dr. N. Haraprasad and Dr. B.P. Hema, Department of Biotechnology, SJCE, Mysuru are the coordinators of this programme which will be inaugurated on May 29 at 10.30 am in the Seminar Hall of Golden Jubilee Bhavan.
