Mysore/Mysuru: Udayagiri Police, on Aug. 20, have arrested a person on charges of selling whitener and solution as narcotic substances at the burial grounds in Ghousianagar and have seized three boxes of whitener and solution from him.

Nuisance created by drug addicts in taking ‘whitener’ continues at public places, like parks, burial grounds and secluded places is on the rise in city. The whitener-inhaling addicts, who apparently come from abusive backgrounds, are found creating nuisance in public places after getting high. They pick up arguments others and if anyone tries to intervene, they get aggressive.

Whitener is a white fluid used to mask errors in handwritten, typewritten or printed papers. It is sold in small bottles along with a diluter, which is mostly a solvent like toluene, trichloroethane, bromopropane, methyl benzene, all of which are alcoholic, inflammable products with a pungent smell.

In whitener addiction, addicts inhale the intoxicating chemicals present in the whitener. By doing this, it makes them dizzy, and high. It has a hallucinatory effect on the sniffer. Whiteners contain hydrocarbons which is deadly solvents that can infuse easily with the blood and can affect the Central Nervous System of a person. Some symptoms of solvent addiction are uncharacteristic behaviours such as mood swings and insomnia and may cause kidney, liver and lung damage.
