Shillong: The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) has urged the Meghalaya Government to take swift action following the tragic deaths of two boys from the State due to food poisoning.
HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem stressed the need for a State Fact-Finding Team to investigate the number of children sent by various organisations to educational institutions outside Meghalaya.
The Council demanded a comprehensive database of such organisations, including details of office bearers, contact persons, children enrolled, and their accommodations, to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
HYC noted that over 1,000 children from Meghalaya are currently enrolled in similar programmes across India, highlighting the need for the State Government to prioritise their safety and welfare.
The Council also called for mechanisms to facilitate the safe return of children who wish to come home, especially in cases where financial constraints prevent them from doing so.
“We must ensure the safety and security of our young children to prevent such horrifying incidents from recurring,” Synrem stated, urging immediate Government intervention.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 3 lakh for the families of the deceased and assured full medical assistance for those undergoing treatment.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma confirmed that efforts are underway to bring the remaining students back home safely. As of now, the 22 other students from Meghalaya residing in the hostel are reported to be in stable condition and are under close medical supervision.
