Plan ready to rein in stray dogs

Mysore/Mysuru: The District Administration has chalked out a plan for regulation of stray dogs and to implement Animal Birth Control (ABC) procedure, in compliance with the orders of Supreme Court.

The modalities with regard to implementation of the plan was prepared at the District-level Committee meeting, held under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy at ZP Hall, here recently.

He said, local NGOs should prepare a report on implementing ABC programme and submit the affidavit to District Urban Development Cell (DUDC), within two days. The City Corporation, Town Panchayats, City Municipal Councils and Gram Panchayats should appoint Nodal Officers. After ABC, the dogs should be nursed for three days at Veterinary Hospital, with injections and food, he added.

With the compound wall built around K.R. Hospital and Cheluvamba Hospital, the security guards should restrain stray dogs from entering the campus, he instructed.

Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Dr. C. Nagaraju said, the affidavit received from NGOs shall be forwarded to Urban Development Department. Guidelines on the role and responsibilities of NGOs have been prepared, which should be followed without fail.

As per 2021 census, the stray dogs population in Mysuru city and district is 1,26,856, with 8,197 among them subjected to ABC till 2023-24 and 2025.

Dr. Nagaraju requested the authorities to relocate 40 stray dogs from K.R. Hospital campus to rehab centres, after conducing ABC procedure on them.
