Sir,
It was a pleasure reading the news item titled ‘Remembering T.S. Satyan’ in SOM dated Aug. 16 and Aug. 18 about the legendary Photo-journalist T.S. Satyan.
I knew Satyan from the time he came to Mysore in 1989. We used to meet at Ganabharathi whose President late G.L.N.Ayya was his good friend.
Apart from sharing and consulting about his younger son’s illness, he used to tell me his own story spread over several years. It is exactly 21 years ago in August 2002 his coffee-table volume of photographs ‘In Love with Life’ was released in Mysore by the first lady photo-journalist of India Homai Vyarawalla.
Later in 2003 when I planned to arrange a photo exhibition of my surgical photos rarely exposed to the public at Kalamandira, I met him at his residence in Saraswathipuram with my collection of whether they are worth exhibiting. I was quite nervous till the doyen of photography went through individually and asked me to go ahead. It was so gracious of him to agree to inaugurate the expo and even suggested a very apt title ‘Scalpel and Lens’ to my photo expo.
It was also so kind of Satyan writing a personal note on his book that was released in 2002.
After his passing away in 2009, a condolence meet was arranged at Kalamandira.
Rathna Satyan and their son lived for some time in the house on the main road in Saraswathipuram. After that I have lost touch with the Satyan family.
