Mysuru: Days after men’s hostel students of University of Mysore (UoM) staged a snap stir in the University campus seeking better civic amenities and quality food, the University has decided to build a separate hostel for the University’s Ph.D students.
With more than 1,300 Ph.D students enrolled with the University, the Ph.D Research Students Association had demanded an exclusive hostel.
At present, Ph.D students are staying at old and new PG hostel buildings in Manasagangothri. Now, the University authorities have decided to build a new hostel with 75 rooms at the space close to the new PG hostel, which will ease the pressure on other University hostels, which are at present crowded.
The University plans to float tenders for the construction of the new hostel in December.
Speaking to Star of Mysore, Vice-Chancellor Prof. G. Hemantha Kumar said that the University Syndicate has adopted a resolution to construct an exclusive hostel for Ph.D students. Now, tenders will be invited and the contractor will be asked to finish the works in nine months, he said and added that efforts will be made to ensure that the hostel will be open before the start of the next academic year.
