Sir,
Apropos the news item “Non-functional traffic signals in city trigger chaos, danger” (SOM dated Jan. 23), the observations highlighted in the column are indeed accurate. Non-functional traffic signals are causing significant stress for all road users, including pedestrians.
Until the introduction of freebies, the government was consistently paying its service providers as per the agreements executed. However, since the advent of these freebies, the government’s finances have become strained. As a result, funds are being diverted from essential services, such as traffic management, to departments responsible for offering these free benefits. This shift is occurring at the expense of public services that ensure the safety and well-being of citizens.
While initiatives like free bus travel and free electricity up to 200 units may benefit those living Below the Poverty Line, such measures should not be extended to those Above the Poverty Line. Public resources should be allocated in a way that prioritises those in genuine need.
