Seminar marks World COPD Day

Mysuru:  As part of World COPD Day (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Day), Sarada Vilas College of Pharmacy had organised a seminar on ‘Living well with COPD’ at the College premises in Krishnamurthypuram here yesterday.

Inaugurating the programme, Dr. M.S. Vishweshwara, Medical Superintendent, Bharath Hospital and Institute of Oncology, Mysuru, opined that untreated lung diseases may lead to cancer. 

He attributed many lung diseases to poor air quality and consumption of tobacco products. He opined that deficit in oxygen supply to lungs could be detrimental which may lead to problems even after 10 years. Equating lungs to air filter in automobiles, he said that the latter can be replaced after clogging but not the former. 

Referring to the worst air quality in Delhi, Dr. Vishweshwara advised people to save the environment and avoid burning of tyres, plastic and other trash. 

He contended that regular inhalation of air with poor quality would invite a series of problems for a person after reaching 40 years. He cautioned parents to rethink before taking their small kids on bikes for a casual ride as polluted air can attack the lungs of the kids which could surface as a big problem after ten years or so.

H.K. Srinath, Hon. Secretary, Sarada Vilas Institutions, opined that the life-style of people contribute a lot to their health condition. He said that the air quality in Mysuru is not very bad and added that it should be further improved without any complacency.

Dr. Virupaksha, PKTB Hospital Medical Superintendent, spoke on COPD. College Principal Dr. Hanumanthachar Joshi and others were present.
