Mysore/Mysuru: Sri Nadabrahma Sangeetha Sabha has organised a three-day programme at its premises on JLB Road in city from Nov. 12 to 14 daily at 6 pm.
On Nov. 12, a very interesting Gamaka Programme for Smt. Savitri Raghavendra Memorial Endowment by Raghavendra Rao will be presented by stalwarts from Mattur — Vaachana by Dr. M.S. Sanathkumar and Vyakhyana by Achyuta Avadhani. They will be rendering gamaka on selected portions from ‘Pratima Nataka’ by Mahakavi Bhasa.
Dr. Sanathkumar & Achyuta are erudite scholars, who apart from their main vocation, have taken gamaka as a passion and excelled. Both form an excellent combination and have given hundreds of impressive programmes.
Dr. Sanathkumar has done Ph.D in Yajnavalkya Mitakshara and after serving a long tenure in teaching, is now retired. He is giving gamaka programmes for last 40 years. Though proficient in both Vaachana & Vyakhyana, prefers Vaachana. He has been awarded many honours including Asthana Vidwan from SGS Ashram, Mysuru. A lot of audio and video CDs have been popular. Being from Mattur, he is very traditional and has formed a Trust to promote ‘Sanathana Dharma.’
Achyuta belongs to a younger generation and has chaired Gamaka Conference at Hassan. Being grandson of Gamaka Doyen Markandeya Avadhani, he has profound knowledge in both music and gamaka. A lecturer in Sanskrit at Shivamogga and having a flowery language in both Kannada and Sanskrit, he has earned reputation as a good orator and hence prefers Vyakhyana.
On Nov. 13, Smt. Rukmini Ammal & Sri Ramaswamy Iyengar Memorial Concert sponsored by their children will be a mesmerising Veena Concert from a young artiste C. Charulatha accompanied by A. Radhesh on mridanga and Srinidhi R. Kaundinya on ghata.
Charulatha started learning veena under the tutelage of her grandmother, Dr. R.S. Jayalakshmi, an eminent Musician-Teacher-Musicologist, at the age of 6 years. Born in the year 2006, at the age of 7 years, she participated in the Inaugural Ceremony of ‘FIDE World Chess Championship-2013’, where 70 veena artistes performed in front of the former late Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu — Dr. J. Jayalalithaa.
She has participated in several competitions and won several prizes and awards. She has also over 200 katcheris to her credit over the years including at The Music Academy, Bharatiya Vidhya Bhavan, Raga Sudha Hall, Mudra – Infosys Hall, Arkay Convention Centre, Kalakshetra, Nada Sudha – Velachery, Narada Gana Sabha, the Veena Festival each year organised by Dr. B. Kannan, at Sir P.T. Thyagaraya Hall as part of ‘Marghazi Isai Vizha’ to name a few. Outside Chennai, she had performed at several venues in Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Malaysia. She had been part of ‘Isai Mazhalai’ group of Sri Abaswaram Ramji. She is part of a number of YouTube projects.
On Nov. 14, for Smt. D. Ramabai Memorial Concert sponsored by Dr. M. Jagannath Shenoi of Smt. D. Ramabai Foundation will be a Grand Violin Trio by stalwarts H.K. Venkatram, H.K. Subbarao and H.V. Raghuram, accompanied on mridanga by V. Praveen and ghata by G.S. Ramanujan.
Venkatram, born to H.V. Keshava Rao & Seetamma, had all conducive Malnad atmosphere for music. Because of his strong devotion to music, violin maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman taught him in Gurukula system (1969 to 1975). After giving his first concert in 1975 and getting a nod from his Guru, he has not looked back and is relentlessly performing ever since — both solo as well as accompanying to stalwarts — both in India and abroad. Knowing the fruitfulness of a Gurukul, he runs a free Gurukul training system for music in his village and has trained hundreds of students. To promote music, he has started organisations ‘Nada Suda’ and Sankethi Sangeetha Sabha, for both he is the President and organises very creative programmes. He is presently member of the Karnataka Sangeet Natak Akademi. For his commitment to music, he has got recognition and award from many reputed organisations.
H.K. Subbarao is the younger brother of Venkatram and naturally started his musical journey from Venkatram and later he also trained under Lalgudiji in Gurukul system. He gave his first concert in 1988, then on he is a recognised artiste — performing duet with his brother and accompanying on violin to reputed vocalists.
He also performs in Akashvani, Doordarshan and other TV channels regularly. This apart, a lot of cassettes and CDs are presented by him. He also is a reputed Guru and has trained many students.
H.V. Raghuram is a Computer Science Engineer but dedicated to music. Being the son of Venkatram, he has seamlessly tread the path of his illustrious father; Learnt music from his father and uncle and then moved to Chennai to learn from Lalgudi.
