Sir,
This is in response to the letter titled ‘Helmet wearing: Police must not walk the talk but act the talk’ written by K.B. Ganapathy and published in Star of Mysore dated June 25, regarding the wearing of helmets and the Police in Mysuru city.
I fully endorse his views. In Mysuru city, in many areas, I have seen people riding happily even during daytime. Three or four persons, including the rider ride right in front of the Police in chowks and on beat with total impunity and without fear of the Police at all.
Therefore, there is no point in burdening the Police with further responsibilities of educating the blatant law-breakers.
The primary duty of the Police is to enforce the law enacted by the law-makers. But I find the Police enforcing the law in a way that the local law-makers want it.
Therefore, it is said in jurisprudence that fear of the law is the key to social order.
