Zebra crossing is a rare sight in Mysuru city

September 13, 2025

Sir,

We have been reading various reports almost every day in Star of Mysore over the past few weeks about the worsening traffic conditions in Mysuru — fused signal lights, pothole-filled roads, unmanned traffic junctions, confusing or misleading signboards, and more.

One of the most important elements that can prevent accidents and protect pedestrians is the zebra crossing. Unfortunately, these have now become a rare sight on city roads, causing undue stress to everyone, especially elderly citizens and children, who face great difficulty while crossing busy roads.

With Dasara fast approaching, it is high time that the Mysuru Traffic Police and the City Corporation take immediate action to restore the missing zebra crossings on all busy roads in the city centre, as well as in residential extensions. Additionally, it is crucial to maintain these crossings with regular repainting at timely intervals to ensure they remain visible and effective.

It goes without saying that well-marked zebra crossings instil discipline among motorists, guide pedestrians safely across roads, and play a vital role in preventing accidents.

Pedestrians should feel safe and confident while crossing the road — not fearful or at risk.
