Sir,
The write-up on the vermicompost (earthworm-based) venture by Mysuru Zoo was quite informative (SOM dated Oct. 24, ‘Poop Fortune’). Thank you for the detailed coverage.
It appears that the Zoo authorities are currently focusing on distributing the product to bulk customers such as farmlands, plantations and orchards.
However, they should also consider catering to the growing demand from retail customers — households, kitchen gardeners and hobby florists. There is significant marketing potential in this sector as well.
In this regard, the Zoo’s marketing team could introduce smaller compost packs of 10 kg, 20 kg and 40 kg. Setting up a sales counter near the existing ticket booth could help sell these packs like hot cakes across the counter.
Retail sales have another advantage — many Zoo visitors are tourists from neighbouring States like Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. Such visitors might prefer to purchase smaller packs that are easier to carry.
This could also help spread the message of Mysuru Zoo’s eco-friendly vermicompost to far-off places, potentially increasing demand for future bulk orders. It is hoped that the Zoo authorities will consider this suggestion seriously.
