11 days of fest…: 1,000-tonne waste

October 5, 2025

Mysuru, Oct. 5 (MK&BS)- The 11-day Nada Habba Mysuru Dasara, which concluded with the Jumboo Savari on Thursday (Oct. 2), generated an estimated 1,000 tonnes of waste across the city.

Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) Health Officer Dr. Venkatesh told Star of Mysore that while the daily average waste collection in the city is 50 to 60 tonnes, it surged to 90–100 tonnes per day during Dasara.

The Maharaja’s College Grounds, venue of the Dasara Food Mela, alone accounted for over 300 tonnes of waste.

To manage the festivities, MCC deployed its regular Pourakarmikas and hired 500 additional workers exclusively for Dasara duty.

These personnel worked in three shifts daily, ensuring that key event venues — including the Food Mela, Flower Show and Yuva Sambhrama — remained clean and tidy throughout the fest.

On Raja Marga, the Jumboo Savari route from Mysore Palace to the Torchlight Parade Grounds in Bannimantap, waste clearing began Thursday night and continued until Friday afternoon, restoring normalcy to the road.

Six to ten Pourakarmikas from each ward along the route were deputed for the task. Once traffic density returned to normal, cleaning operations accelerated. By dawn, the road was largely cleared, and by 10 a.m. Friday, 10 to 15 loads of waste up to Tilaknagar junction had been removed. The remainder of the route from Palace to Bannimantap was fully cleared by the afternoon.
