Mysuru: Prof. S.R. Niranjana, Vice-Chancellor, Gulbarga University, has urged Universities across the country to encourage students to face competitive exams confidently.
He was speaking at the two-day brain-storming workshop to face competitive examinations organised by Special Cell for SC&STs and Directorate of Student Welfare, University of Mysore at Senate Bhavan in Manasagangothri Campus yesterday.
He said there are 950 Universities and more than 40,000 higher education institutions and colleges in the country but hardly a few students appear for competitive exams from Karnataka.
He attributed delay in the recruitment process, corruption and other reasons for student’s disinterestedness to appear for such exams.
Appreciating Mysore University’s initiative to conduct this workshop to motivate students to take up competitive exams, he also asked students to make use of
Prof. Niranjana said that University Grants Commission (UGC) has given guidelines to all Varsities to focus on physical, technological and intellectual infrastructure improvement activities. Indeed this is also the main yardstick for National Assessment and Accreditation Council NAAC) which is an autonomous body established by the UGC to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country. Training students in three key areas such as Information, Communication and Technology is must to empower them to lead their life independently in this knowledge-driven technological world, he added. Elaborating on the unemployment problem, he said that over 50,000 talented students migrated to advanced countries in search of decent jobs and perks. The nation must address this ‘brain drain’ problem, ensure jobs and create suitable work-friendly environment, he said.
In his keynote address, Syndicate Member and Geology Department’s Prof. A. Balasubramanian said that Union government will be recruiting 10 lakh posts pending in various Departments for the year 2019-20 by conducting competitive exams. Mysore University is expecting at least 10,000 students to be selected from this region.
Presiding over the function, UoM Registrar Prof. Lingaraja Gandhi said that 85 per cent graduates coming out of various Universities lack communication and job skills that suit job market. There is an urgent need for graduates and policy-makers to focus on these issues in this highly competitive world, he opined.
