Mysore/Mysuru: The newly elected executive committee of the Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) will mark World Consumer Rights Day 2026 (March 15) with innovative, school and college-centric activities. As a curtain-raiser, a monthly meeting will be held on Feb. 8 at 6/1 Vivekananda Road, Yadavagiri, Mysuru, at 4 pm.
Navin Kumari, President of the District Consumer Redressal Commission, will be the speaker. Consumers in Mysuru can learn about the Forum’s performance. Between 2023 and 2026, the commission disposed of 1,895 cases, while 1,328 new cases were filed — a remarkable feat.
However, the original philosophy behind the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 — minimal reliance on lawyers, few or no adjournments, and disposal of cases within 90 days — still leaves scope for improvement.
In Mysuru, only 31 cases were disposed of within 90 days. Lawyers were absent in just 98 cases out of the 1,895 heard, and only four cases were settled without adjournments, indicating that consumer forums have begun to function like civil courts.
MGP plans to administer questionnaires to assess public awareness of consumer rights and responsibilities while also educating students about the consumer movement and civic responsibility. The final event will be a seminar to discuss reforms. For details, contact Ph: 0821-2515150.
