Mysore/Mysuru: The heavy rains accompanied by strong winds late on Sunday night has wreaked havoc in the city, with Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) suffering huge losses to the extent of Rs.50 lakh.
Nearly 200 electric poles were uprooted, 14 power transformers, overhead power cables totally running upto 2.4 kms and other electrical installations were damaged and more than 300 trees were uprooted or fallen due to the strong winds.
CESC Superintending Engineer K.M. Munigopalraju told ‘Star of Mysore’ that with more than 300 trees getting uprooted on Sunday night, the CESC has appealed the MCC to remove all dried, hollow and dead trees in the city as a safety measure.
Noting that underground (UG) cable laying works is under progress in the city, he said that the CESC has appealed the MCC to install utility ducts, which is very vital for the laying of UG cables.
Maintaining that CESC has taken all precautionary measures, Munigopalraju said that outsourced workers have been engaged for restoration of fallen electric poles and all measures have been taken to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
Stating that dried and dead trees pose a threat to power cables, he said that it is also important to take up regular trimming of roadside trees so that the branches do not come in the way of overhead power lines.
The MCC and CESC authorities are engaged in clearing the fallen trees and snapped power cables, which has posed a challenge in some spots and the task is going on for the third day today, according to sources.
