Devaraja Market: An iconic landmark deserves revival

March 2, 2025

Sir,

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the current state of Devaraja Market, a beloved and iconic landmark of Mysuru.

As a frequent visitor since 1996, I have witnessed its gradual decline and believe it is long overdue for a comprehensive renovation.

Devaraja Market is not just a place to shop; it is an integral part of Mysuru’s heritage and a significant draw for tourists. Foreigners, in particular, are captivated by the market’s unique charm, appreciating its organised layout — from fresh vegetables and vibrant flowers to fragrant perfumes, religious offerings and a dazzling array of fancy goods.

However, the Market’s current condition belies its potential. The dilapidated archway at the entrance presents an unwelcoming sight and the poor drainage system leads to unpleasant odours and unhygienic conditions. The lack of proper segregation for rotten vegetables further exacerbates the issue, creating a pungent smell that detracts from the overall experience.

I urge the State Government to revisit the renovation plan for Devaraja Market rather than its latest plans to demolish and rebuild the structure.

Drawing inspiration from successful urban renewal projects like the Chandni Chowk revitalisation in Delhi and the beautification of the lanes surrounding the Golden Temple, the Government should prioritise a remodel that respects the Market’s traditional character while incorporating modern amenities.

A revitalised Devaraja Market would not only enhance the city’s aesthetic appeal but also boost local businesses and improve the quality of life for both vendors and customers.

I believe that this iconic landmark deserves to be restored to its former glory and continue to serve as a vibrant hub for the community and a cherished destination for visitors.
