Heritage buildings need periodic inspection

April 12, 2026

Sir,

Mysuru is home to several beautiful heritage buildings and structures, many of which reflect the city’s rich architectural legacy. There is a strong public sentiment that authorities must take timely steps to preserve these landmarks for future generations. However, some of these structures have deteriorated over time and are now on the verge of collapse. In several cases, there is an ongoing debate on whether they should be restored or reconstructed while retaining their heritage features.

Unfortunately, decisions on such matters often take a long time due to various administrative and technical considerations. One such heritage building is the structure on Sayyaji Rao Road that houses the Central Public Library, Chamarajendra Technical Institute and Cauvery Emporium.

Although the building continues to function, its condition raises concerns. As seen in the photographs above, parts of the structure appear to be in a fragile state and could collapse if timely action is not taken. The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) must initiate preventive measures before the situation worsens.

It would also be prudent for the Government to constitute a permanent technical team to periodically inspect heritage and other Government buildings. Such inspections would help identify structural weaknesses early and enable prompt action to safeguard Mysuru’s iconic buildings and structures.
