January 9, 2018

Mysuru: City’s amateur theatre group Kadamba Ranga Vedike has been chosen for Rotary Namana Award-2017 instituted jointly by Namana Kalavedike and Rotary Mysore Midtown. It will be presented at a programme to take place at Ganabharathi on Adichunchanagiri Road, Kuvempunagar at 7 pm tomorrow (Jan.10).

Theatre personality and Rajyotsava awardee Rtn. Rajashekar Kadamba will receive the award.

Kadamba Ranga Vedike has made a mark for itself in theatre activities. The Vedike, which was started by theatre personality Rajashekar Kadamba in 1963, has enacted over a hundred plays over the years.

The group, which adapted Ta.Ra.Su’s novel ‘Durgasthamana’  into a play, created a record of sorts, with the play becoming most popular at that time.

The Vedike has the distinction of being the first theatre group to organise a play at Kalamandira in 1986, as part of World Kannada Meet. Apart from performing plays, the Vedike is actively engaged in other theatre-related activities.

Namana Kalavedike, a cultural group of the city, was founded by Nandakumar couple. This Kalavadike has played host to a number of children theatre camps, film appreciation camps, film fests and theatre plays over the years.

The Vedike produced a documentary on  Film Director H.L.N. Sinha, marking his 100th birth anniversary.  The Namana Kalavedike, which has a full-fledged auditorium, is a central force for many creative and innovative theatre and cultural activities.
