Mysuru: ‘Dahi Handi’ competition as part of Krishna Janmashtami celebrations will be held on Aug.25 at J.K. Grounds here, said former MLA Maruthi Rao Pawar.

He was addressing a press meet organised by Sri Krishnajnmashtami Utsav Samithi at Pathrakartara Bhavan here on July 27 and said that Lord Krishna’s famous Makhan Chor Leela ‘Dahi Handi’ will be organised during the festival between 2 pm and 6.30 pm.

Mysore Agarwal Samaj and Sri Krishna Janmashtami Celebration Committee President Dr. S.K. Mittal said that students from various colleges can participate in ‘Dahi Handi’ where 10 ft to 12 ft, 15 ft to 17 ft and 20 ft to 22 ft high earthen vessel filled with yogurt will be installed and Govinda Groups will try to break the pot by making pyramids. 

In this, youths in the age group of about 18 years, irrespective of caste, creed or religion can register their teams till Aug.10.

Participants will be given T-shirts and certificates. The winning team will be awarded with trophy/cup and cash prize. Nearly 5,000 people are expected to participate. This game, which is being organised in Karnataka for the first time in such a big way, will promote our traditional play. Milk, yogurt, Navneet are the basis of our health. They will be promoted and the message for preservation, breed improvement and safety of cow progeny will be the message of the event, said Dr. Mittal. 

The members offered condolence to Kargil Martyrs by observing silence on the occasion.

Gopal Rao, Dattatray Shinde, Secretary of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Mysuru, Pritish Kumar, Sriram of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Satyavrat, Pravin Goyal, Vice-President of Agarwal Society, Arun Bagriya, Arun Jaluka and Anil Kanodia were present.
