Mysuru: The Fifth Additional District and Sessions Court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment besides imposing a fine of Rs.1,000 for killing his wife by strangulating her.
The man, who was sentenced, is 38-year-old Jayaramu alias Bangaru of Devitandre village in K.R. Nagar taluk. He had strangulated his wife on Apr.10, 2013.
The victim, Rathnamma, daughter of Beluraiah of Gulaganjihalli in Holenarasipur taluk, was given in marriage to Jayaramu 15 years ago and the couple has two children.
Jayaramu, who was addicted to liquor, used to come home drunk daily, and assault his wife. Depressed over her husband’s behaviour, Rathnamma had left the house along with her children and was staying at her parents’ house. She had also filed a case at K.R. Nagar JMFC Court seeking alimony.
On Apr. 10, 2013, Rathnamma, who had appeared before the Court, was waiting for the bus to go back to her parents’ house when Jayaramu asked her to come to his place as he wanted to get her rice and new dress for the children for the festival. He then took her to the village and strangulated her, thus killing her.
Saligrama Police, who had registered the case following a complaint by Rathnamma’s brother Manjunath, conducted investigation and had submitted a charge-sheet against Jayaramu to the Court. Judge Vijayakumar M. Ananda Shetty, who heard the arguments from both the sides, found Jayaramu guilty of the crime and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Public Prosecutor Ajith Kumar D. Hamigi argued on behalf of the Government.
