Mysore/Mysuru: Vidwan Belgaum Seshappa Vijayaraghavan (88), a music scholar and a resident of Kuvempunagar, passed away last night in city.
He leaves behind his wife, sons Dr. B.V. Shyamsunder and B.V. Ramachandra and a host of relatives and friends.
Born to B. Seshappa and Lakshmamma couple on Sept. 2, 1935, Vid. Vijayaraghavan has studied MA in Kannada and completed Vidwat in Karnatak Vocal Music.
He also studied Sangeet Shastra Praveena from his grandfather B.S. Ramaiah, Ganavisgarada from his uncle Nadayogi Dr. Mysore B. Devendrappa, father B. Seshappa and uncle B. Krishnappa.
Vid. Vijayaraghavan, who was also trained in Veena, Violin, Chitraveena and Jaltarang, had the capacity to sing Pallavi set in ‘Panchataleswari’ and ‘Saptha Taleswari,’ besides having wide experience in rendering Kritis of Haridasa, Shivasharanas and Vachanas in many programmes on All India Radio (AIR) and in Sangeetha Sabhas.
He had served at the Government High School in Somwarpet, Kodagu, as a music teacher from 1963 to 67 and at University College of Fine Arts (Manasagangothri) as a music lecturer from 1968 to 72, as Assistant Professor from 1973 to 92 and Professor of Musicology and Principal from 1993 to 1998.
Vid. Vijayaraghavan was honoured by the late Maharaja Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar in 1948, conferred with ‘Karnataka Gaana Kala Tilaka’ title by the State Sangeetha Natak Academy in 1993 and Kannada Rajyotsava award in 1994 among other awards.
Last rites were performed at Jayanagar Burial Grounds this afternoon, according to family sources.
