Mysuru: The much-awaited Srirangapatna Bypass on the 10-lane Access Controlled Expressway between Mysuru and Bengaluru (NH-275) opened for commuters last evening. The opening comes three days of the Mandya bypass being opened.
Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha posted an aerial video of the bypass last evening on his Twitter account. The Srirangapatna bypass extends up to seven kilometres and with its opening, all the bypasses on the 118-km stretch have been opened for traffic. The Expressway starts near the NICE Road on the outskirts of Bengaluru and ends at the Outer Ring Road junction in Mysuru.
This particular bypass avoids Srirangapatna town and commuters can directly head towards Mandya from Mysuru. In all, the full Expressway stretch consists of six bypasses at Bidadi (7-km), Ramanagara and Channapatna (22-km), Maddur (7-km), Mandya (10-km) and Srirangapatna (7-km). These will reduce traffic congestion and enhance road safety.
The project — estimated cost of which is more than Rs. 8,000 crore — has been taken up under the Bharatmala Pariyojana (BMP) involving the six-laning of National Highway-275 along with two-lane service roads on both sides, making it a 10-lane Expressway. It consists of both brownfield and greenfield sections and the construction has been taken up and completed by Bhopal-based Dilip Buildcon.
The Expressway project has been developed under two packages. The first one runs from Bengaluru to Nidaghatta in Maddur taluk for around 56 km. The second package, which is 61 km long, connects Nidaghatta to Mysuru.
The scope of the work included the construction of an 8-km-long elevated corridor, nine major bridges, 42 minor bridges, 64 underpasses, 11 overpasses, four Road-Over-Bridges (ROBs) and five bypasses.
Let us get this about this Mysore-Bangalore Highway.
Besides the straight-through traffic from Mysore-Bangalore for example, there are by passes to this highway through vehicles from Srirangapatna, Madya, Maddur, Chennapatna and Ramanagara can join this traffic. Plus the toll collection.
Given the massive numbers of cars involved , how many should elapse, before this Highway gets clogged with cars and vehicles, tool collections taking time, and the journey taking more than 3 hours. Add to this the quick wear and tear of the Highway , the singnals malfunctions, toll collection issues etc..
Putting this Highway egg in one basket turns out to be idiotic in the end, when it becomes almost unusable with slow journey times.
Instead of this 10-lane, cutting the lanes to half, and multiplying the Mysore-Bangalore train tracks, so that express trains with 4 major stops in between and express trains that run without stops , and scheduling them properly, would carry bulk of the passenger traffic and reduce the traffic. Electrification of trains cut the time taken for journeys.
The dig about the road with imaginary issues is unwarranted and is with ulterior motives. The writer ignores the benefit for heavy vehicles and to national exchequer by reducing travel time.
…and nobody has thought about traffic pileup at Outer Ring (columbia asia/manipal) junction. Imagine, many vehicles reaching non-stop to this junction from Bengaluru and getting stuck!
Trains will definitely reduce passenger traffic but not vehicular traffic on the expressway. All the goods cannot be transported to other places only by trains. Private vehicles are not used to reach Bangalore railway station from Mysore. People need to go to their respective places after reaching Bangalore. Bangalore’s internal commute is not so reliable especially during peak hours. Need to wait endlessly and moreover should struggle to get inside the buses at peak hours makes the commute horrible. Auto and cabs are very costlier and again need to wait for them when you are in hurry. It will be convenient to go there by private vehicle instead of relying on the available means of commuting which will add more and more traffic to the expressway. Private vehicles are not luxury these days, it has become essential now.
One thing we will miss is the good old roadside dhaba which had its own charm and affordable menu for the sake of truck drivers. Hope 4 rest area planned of 25 acre each has space for the good old dhaba .
@Sanjay Kini
You seem to have weird ideas!
Highways and dhaba do not mix, as even truck drivers would like to get on driving to reach the destination. When this highway is clogged with trucks and other vehicles, traffic moving very slowly, dhaba, is the last thing in their mindsI
I came back to Bengaluru on Saturday night. I was thrilled to bypass Mandya. It took hardly about 1 hour and 20 minutes to reach Kengeri from Hinkal Flyover even though I was driving leisurely. This is the best thing that ever happened in the history of Karnataka in terms of road connectivity. This is what people want to see, hear and do from a Government that boasts of the advantages of a double-engine government.
I heard that the high-speed rail project will be incorporated into this 10-Lane ExpressWay in the near future!!!
Please restrict slow moving trucks to left most lane and lane change only while overtaking another truck. Make service roads only for 2 and 3 wheelers.
Greetings, as someone has mentioned
about trucks oertaking, overtaking must be stopped by trucks. All has to go one below another with distance on left side (slow lane) and will reduce or .void accidents. This can be seen in UAE (UNITED ARAB EMIRSTES) an example . All fast lane to be free most of the time. One can see by visit g UAE or through videos. All signals has to be of international standards, zebra crossin etc. One can write to the concerned officials to have a look at UAE and follow. Regsrds, ramesh
This is really a good development for people of Mysore. Surprised to see some negative comments. Now it is like Mumbai, Pune express way. Let’s be happy..
