Where is the necessity to straighten Jaladarshini Road?

October 19, 2017

Sir,

Maj. Gen. S.G. Vombatkere’s letter on straightening of Jaladarshini Road hits the nail directly on the head (Star of Mysore dated Oct. 12). There is ample clarity and reason to give up such useless projects. I remember another letter some years back by retired Engineer  H. R. Bapu Satyanarayana, on the same topic after an accident in which the compound wall of the University was damaged by the speeding vehicle at the curve.

After inspecting the place the renowned engineer had described lack of banking on the outer curve at the bend as the main reason for many accidents besides the speeding. He had wondered how such a fundamental requirement was ignored while building the road and had decried the quality of engineers responsible for such bad design.

No doubt the vehicles will zoom at a greater speed when the widening is done only to result in more accidents and loss of life, that too within the city limits. Where is the necessity? It is another project to plunder the money for some other purpose.

  1. Sir, Having followed the letters from your readers regarding straightening the road near Jaladarshini, I agree with their conclusion that it is unnecessary. As the letters point out that the reason accidents happen at this curve is due to rash driving. The money would be better spent elsewhere.

May I suggest installing traffic lights at the junction of Valmiki and Vinoba roads?

  2. Raghu says:

Did somebody found that Angle of banking on this road was the lesser reason for accidents than the speed? If they were civil engineers, the first thing the nation needs is to snatch their degree and disqualify them as engineers! If they are not, their stupidly should be ignored but preferably they must be removed from any decision making positions or even talking about thus issue. This is the same logic like saying , hospital beds are more dangerous than rash driving or drinking poison or drinking and jumping off a tall building as most as more people die on the hospital bed!
Bad and rash driving is a major cause of accidents for sure ! If we assume 1 out of 100 people are rash and fast drivers, on a good road, the percentage of accidents is 1%. But if that road had a wrong banking angle, the accidents can be as high as 20%.4 wheelers have less of a problem compared to two wheelers! But still presence of 2 wheelers and 4 wheelers complicates the issue!
Tgatthar money can be better spent anywhere? Some stinking Bhagya I suppose?
