Mysuru: An 82-year-old woman with complex medical conditions successfully underwent a rare Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure at Narayana Multi-specialty Hospital in city recently.

The elderly patient suffered from various health conditions and had been admitted numerous times at various hospitals. In last three months, she was admitted thrice at Narayana Multi-specialty Hospital, Mysuru, where she was brought in critical condition and was kept on ventilator for many days.

On diagnosis, the doctors found that she was suffering from multiple comorbidities such as Coronary Artery Diseases (CAD), severe triple vessel diseases, sever aortic stenosis, Moderate Mitral Regurgitation, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) with severe pulmonary hypertension, sick sinus syndrome and morbid obesity. The doctors decided to perform a three-stage intervention treatment modality and the patient’s family members, being from medical fraternity themselves understood the intricacies involved and agreed to proceed with the same.

During the first stage of intervention, the doctors removed all the blockages and implanted three stents. For the next stage, Percutaneous TAVI was performed by Dr. V. Keshava Murthy – Chief of Interventional Cardiology, Dr. M.N. Ravi – Chief Cardiac Surgeon & Clinical Director and Dr. Ravindra Rao, an expert in TAVI and Structural heart diseases from Ahmedabad.

On the fifth day, the patient started showing signs of recovery and the third and final procedure was conducted wherein the doctors implanted a single-chamber permanent pacemaker to the patient.

After the completion of the three-stage intervention procedure, the patient recovered well and was discharged soon.

Addressing a press meet at Pathrakarthara Bhavan here recently, Dr. Keshava Murthy said, “For the first time in Mysuru, a rare and innovative intervention was performed on critically ill patient with multiple co-morbid conditions.
