Sir,
The only way to curb traffic rule violations in city is to go back to the penalties issued by the Central Government and in my opinion we should increase the punishment period.
If a rider or driver is caught breaking the traffic law on three consecutive times within a period of 6 months, his or her licence must be suspended for a year.
If he or she is caught driving without a licence, then the penalty must be revocation of licence for a period of not less than 5 years.
Here I welcome the recent decision by the City Police to personally visit the residence of violators to collect the fine amount.
At times the rider is not the owner of the two-wheeler. Then the responsibility to pay the penalties will be the registered owner of the vehicle.
Breaking of traffic rules, wrong way driving/riding, talking on the phone while the vehicle is moving, no seat belts, no insurance etc., must be penalised severely. Even moving at red signals before the signal turns green is to be considered as jumping the RED light.
Overspeeding and using the oncoming lane to overtake should result in impounding the vehicle and suspension of licence. Only when the punishment is very severe and hits the wallet, will people learn to obey rules.
