Bhabha Atomic Research Centre Officer delivers talk on ‘Nuclear Power’ at IEI Mysuru

Mysore/Mysuru: Mumbai-based Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) Officer (in-Charge) Dr. A. Chandrashekar said that the use of Nuclear Power will increase in sectors such as Energy, Health, Agriculture, Defence and Technology.

He was delivering a lecture on the topic ‘Nuclear Power – Applications and Radiation Safety Factors’ organised by the Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ISHRAE) at the Institution  of Engineers-India (IEI) on JLB Road here on Sunday.

Pointing out that the Government plans to provide 5,000 Units of electricity to every household by 2047, Dr. Chandrashekar observed that the use of conventional methods of power generation will not help in achieving this target.

Noting that sectors such as power generation, Industries, Medical, Food and Agriculture use Nuclear Energy and Radiation, he said that power supplies  to these sectors will be all the more difficult through natural sources of energy. As such, priority must be given for using Nuclear Fuel in power generation, he opined.

Stating that there is a common perception in the public domain that use of Nuclear Power is unsafe, Dr. Chandrashekar said that though it is true to some extent, the dangers/ hazards from Nuclear Power is less. This can be seen from the statistics concerning explosion in Nuclear and Coal Plants, he added.

Noting that Radiation is widely used in treatment of Cancer, he said power production using Radiation rays is much easier than other  conventional methods.

IEI Mysuru Centre Chairman Dr. R. Deepu, Secretary Dr. Mohan Krishna, ISHRAE office-bearers Aruni Srinivas, N. Nagabushan, Bhaskar and others were present during the  lecture programme.
