RIE expert delves on analysing teachers’ performance

March 8, 2025

Mysuru: Examination Section and Internal Quality Assessment Cell (IQAC) of SBRR Mahajana First Grade College (Autonomous), Jayalakshmipuram in city, had organised a workshop on ‘Assessment and Evaluation: Enhancing Teaching and Learning’ recently.

Dr. T.V. Somashekar, Assistant Professor, Department of Education, Regional Institute of Education (RIE) – NCERT, Mysuru, was the resource person.

He said that one can look this activity in both the directions — one in teacher’s perspective and another after evaluating assessment process.

“Assessment helps in setting your own standards; compare you with your own self to improve yourself. Primarily assessment is for self-improvement. Assessment is done from our own perspective whereas evaluation has some set of rules to be followed; basical assessment involves evaluation in it. The prime objective of assessment is to decipher the learning needs of students to allow them to build on their strengths and support them to overcome the gaps in learning, if any,” said Dr. Somashekar.

By observing students learning and development using classroom and school based assessment strategies, he explained about the principles of assessment, learning outcomes and criterion for better assessment.

The major purpose of ‘assessment is for facilitating the learning’ process and ‘assessment as the learning’ process which encourages students to critically assess, reflect and analyse their own work by identifying the strengths and gaps in learning.

The third one is ‘assessment of learning’ which sets the benchmarks in learning against curricular aims and objectives, he emphasised. Teachers must know that the assessment procedure they are following must be valid and reliable.
