Safety of road users on Mysuru-Bengaluru Expressway

June 26, 2023

Sir,

I write this letter to reflect upon the growing concerns on the safety of road users on the Mysuru-Bengaluru Expressway.

Recent accidents have become very common on this stretch, resulting in loss of precious lives.

While these accidents continue to make headlines, there appears to be a lack of information about the measures taken by the authorities to improve safety and create an enjoyable commuting experience for all.

It is essential that we are aware of the actions being taken to address these issues. The following are some of the concerns:

•  Who holds the responsibility for ensuring the safety of road users on the Mysuru-Bengaluru Highway? A clear understanding of the roles and accountabilities of the various stakeholders would be helpful to all.

• Are there any blind spots or flaws in the design or maintenance of the Highway? Identifying and rectifying these shortcomings is vital to prevent any future accidents on the Expressway.

•   What are the dos and don’ts for vehicle owners? It is crucial to educate and promote safe driving practices among all road users to reduce the risk of accidents.

•  Does the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have a regulatory mechanism in place to address concerns raised by frequent users of the Highway? There can be a platform to voice their feedback and suggestions, ensuring a collaborative approach towards improving safety.

• Considering the success of deploying AI cameras in tracking traffic violations in other regions, is it not possible to implement similar systems on the Highway? This could help identify and penalise erring drivers, promoting better compliance with traffic rules.

• In cases where accidents occur due to faulty road infrastructure, should the NHAI be obligated to provide compensation to the families who have lost their loved ones? Establishing accountability is crucial in maintaining public trust.

• Lastly, when can the citizens of Mysuru expect a responsible undertaking from the authorities to ensure safe and secure travel between Mysuru and Bengaluru?

As concerned individuals, it is our collective responsibility to seek answers to these questions and advocate for road safety improvements.

It is my hope that this column serves as a catalyst for discussion, action and a commitment from the authorities to prioritise the safety and well-being of all road users on the Mysuru-Bengaluru Express Highway.

Note: It is said in Veda that ‘You are the architect of your destiny.’ The way one drives decides the driver’s destiny. God is the architect of this universe. Can we blame Him for the natural disaster? NHAI is the architect of the Expressway. Can one blame it for the accidents when thousands drive safely? Let us introspect. Of course, fault-lines must be fixed by the NHAI.—Ed
