SSLC results: Pass percentage dips to a 7-year low

May 13, 2017

Bengaluru: Academic results took a downward turn this year in Karnataka as the number of students in Karnataka clearing both the II PUC and Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) or Class 10 examinations came down when compared to last year.

Of the 8,56,286 candidates who appeared for the SSLC exams, 5,81,134 passed, recording a pass percentage of 67.87. The results were declared yesterday by Primary and Secondary Education Minister Tanveer Sait.

With 625 marks, Sumanth Hegde from MES Kishore Kendra School, Bengaluru, H. Poornananda from St. Joachim’s High School, Puttur and Pallavi Shirahatti from SRA Composite Junior College, Bagalkot, scored 100%. Six students scored just one mark less.

Girls continued to outperform boys with 74.08% passing as opposed to 62.42% among boys. However, the pass percentages in both categories were significantly lower than those of last year, when girls recorded a pass percentage of 80.59 and boys 70.21. Students who appeared for exams in English medium had the highest pass percentage with 78.46% passing the exam, and those in Tamil medium came in at the bottom with 48.96%.

Except for students appearing for the Telugu and Tamil medium, pass percentages of all other language mediums were down by about 10% over the previous year, with Hindi medium seeing the biggest dip of 20%.

Among the districts, Udupi had the highest pass percentage of 84.23. However, this is lower than the 89.72% success it enjoyed in 2016, when it came second for the State. Udupi was closely followed by Dakshina Kannada with 82.39. At the other end, Bidar came in at last with a pass percentage of 62.2 and Bagalkot finished just above with 64.53.

Bengaluru Rural, which topped the list in 2016 with 89.85%, has slipped to the 10th place with 77.03%. Kodagu district secured the 9th place, Mysuru stood at 21st place and Mandya secured 23rd place.
