Stop Hebbal First Stage from turning into a garbage dump

August 17, 2025

Sir,

The pictures illustrate the pathetic condition of Hebbal First Stage, 1st Main Road, coming under Ward No. 1, of Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), which has already become a garbage dump for some unscrupulous residents and outsiders alike.

Though the location address starts with Ward No. 1, one would expect it to be the first in any initiative administratively, the rampant dumping of waste in an open residential area, raises serious questions on the commitment of the MCC in making Mysuru a clean city, especially after the recent accolade of getting a clean city tag in a particular category.

The area is an elevated, breezy and calm place very suitable for evening walkers and residents who would like to take a stroll or just relax in the evening, and it was so a couple of years ago.

As it is near my residence, I volunteered to take photos and show it to the local authorities and request them to take prompt action immediately, so that it doesn’t become a favourite place for garbage dumpers and stray animals, which would do the next job of scattering the waste all around.

However, my couple of attempts bore no fruit, and now we have full-fledged visual and physical pollution right in the middle of this public area, shooing away any evening walkers or cyclists and also posing a serious health hazard for residents.

In fact, there are similar garbage dump locations in this Ward, presenting an unpleasant sight, and this problem was also highlighted. However, I do not know the priority the MCC or the local Zonal Office attaches to this most obnoxious of problems in a supposedly clean city like Mysuru, and it reminds one of an era some two decades back when throwing garbage in the open was a common sight.

It is high time the authorities take note and take some concrete steps not only to clear all such dumps in this area but also to take preventive steps to deter garbage throwers from creating a mess in the area.

I also had some discussion with the local Pourakarmikas when they were removing this trash, often with bare hands, regarding this problem, but they seem helpless in this matter and do what is just told to them.

I request the MCC Commissioner and the local authorities to look into this problem and address it on priority, and prevent the area from sliding into a garbage dump site.
