‘Muslim mindset about country must change; Democracy can survive only if truth comes out’

Mysore/Mysuru: People must read about real history of Tipu Sultan and  see the play based on research to understand his true nature. Truth not only must come out but also must be disseminated. If truth is not told to people, there is no way democracy can survive, said celebrated Kannada novelist and Saraswathi Samman Awardee Dr. S.L. Bhyrappa.

He was speaking after releasing the book on play ‘Tipu Nija Kanasugalu’ (Real Dreams of Tipu) written by Rangayana Director Addanda C. Cariappa at Bhoomigeeta in Rangayana last evening. The event was held in a packed auditorium of Rangayana where spectators had to sit on the floor for want of chairs. The proceedings were held amidst tight Police security.

“People must also read ‘The Real Tipu’, a researched book written by H.D. Sharma, a non-Kannadiga, which has been translated by the renowned translator Dr. Pradhan Gurudatta as ‘Tipu Nija Swarupa’. This book has been reprinted 17 times and it unveils the true nature of Tipu Sultan. Likewise, many books have been written on him and his rule,” he said.

Change in mindset needed

“As Dr. B.R. Ambedkar himself said, however good a Constitution might be, democracy depends on how the Constitution is put into practice. When the country was partitioned, a question arose whether the nation is important or the religion. As a result, a separate nation was carved out for Muslims, based on their religion,” he said.

“While dividing the country, it was strongly believed that those Muslims who stayed back in India would respect the sentiments of its majority community and that they would be our own and similar would be the case in Pakistan. But when it comes to issues like Babri Masjid, Kashi, Gyanvapi Mosque and Tipu Sultan, the stand taken by Muslims is in accordance with their religion and they have refused to accept the majority sentiment, facts and reality. In these issues, for them, religion is more important than the country. When it comes to accepting truth, Muslims must change their mindset,” Dr. Bhyrappa said.

Tipu had introduced Persian lingo in administration and he cannot be considered as pro-Kannada as being touted by his supporters. He also changed the names of many towns and cities. “Usually, Jayantis celebrate the births of saints, poets, social reformers and revolutionary rulers. I wonder how Tipu Jayanti was introduced despite knowing his true nature,” he said.

Rangayana Director Addanda C. Cariappa’s book on play ‘Tipu Nija Kanasugalu’ placed in a basket of flowers being brought to stage on a ‘pallaki’ by men dressed in soldier’s attire of Tipu period.

Vote bank in mind: MP

Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha said that those people who complain about the imposition of Hindi do not speak a word about Tipu imposing Persian language in administration and they still diligently follow the names of places and thousands of Persian words in administration given  by Tipu. “Why the followers of Tipu and so-called Kannada activists do not speak against this,” he asked.

“One can understand that MLA Tanveer Sait has the vote bank in mind while speaking about erecting a Tipu statue. But why is the statue inevitable for MLC A.H. Vishwanath? Modern Mysuru has nothing to do with Tipu. Instead, the Wadiyars have contributed immensely to the growth and prosperity of the entire region. I will relentlessly work to honour their memory,” Pratap Simha said.

Conversion of family elder by Tipu

Claiming that the play ‘Tipu Nija Kanasugalu’ was based on letters of Tipu and other historical documents, author Addanda  Cariappa said that these public documents and books unmask Tipu Sultan who has been valorised by ideologically-driven historians and so-called left-liberal politicians.

“Thousands of Kodava families were converted by Tipu and those who disobeyed were killed and tortured. In fact, an ancestor of my family was forcibly converted by Tipu Sultan. The Brahmins of Melukote still do not celebrate Deepavali because it is on that day they were massacred by Tipu. Incidents like these prompted me to write this historical and fact-based play,” Cariappa said.

  1. Howdy, Modi! says:

This fool Simha, a slave of Narendra Modi, who abandoned his wife, compres the imposition of this fanatic Narendra Modi, with the imposition of Persian by Tipu Sultan centuries ago, and paid the price for his misadventures.
When would Narendra Modi, and his 40% commission corruption gang is going to pay the price, like Titp did?
Narendra Modi has lost more territories than Nehru did in the recent China- India skirmishes, and China occupied a swathe of good land. Where as Nehru lost only places like Aksai Chin, not a desired piece of land.
When Nehru lost those territories, it was clearly stated in the news, where as Narendra Modi and his Hindi zealot gang, suppressed that any territory was lost. Only in the West the truth was found out.
Again during 2021, hundreds of thousands of Indians died for want of oxygen supplies, in one of the vicious Covid infection spread,. The BJP and Narendra Modi, escaped the blame. The Western media showed funeral pires of poor victims who died because the oxygen supply was not available to them, but yet the VIPs got the supply taken from these poor patients.
This BJP , and the villains lime Simha must be ashamed. But they do not have any shame.
Congress was corrupt ,but this BJP and Modi are corrupt beyond any thing that Congress was involved in. The 40% commission government at the state and at the centre.
Wait until Narendra Modi sanctioned UAE-Mysore non-stop flight starts to function. He promised it to the Malayalee so called businessmen in the UAE, during a stop over there. These are the very so called businessmen wjho are smuggling gold into Kerala through its airports.
Simha and Modi, will ensure that Mysore becomes the gold smuggler’s citadel. It is already the focus of Hawala illegal. money channel.
Tipu Sultan, the tug paid the price for his misdeeds through his life.
When are Modi and his gang of Hindi zealots are going to pay the price like Tipu did?

  2. SiriGannadamGelge says:

Kannada activists fought against Urdu imposition by the congress govt in 90s. They have fought and been fighting against Hindi, Tamil, Telugu… imposition for over a century. It’s Modi, Singh, Nehru, Patel, Gandhi, Tipu… who were all about wiping off Kannada from the face of this planet.
Do not try to mix your religious agenda with pro-Kannada activism, it’s very transparent, we can easily see it.
Many of us do not venerate Tipu and Shivaji because of their anti-Kannada/Karnataka activities. Can you say the same Mr. Simha and Bhyrappa, if you are so pro-Kannada? If you are all about popularizing historical truths, how about slavery in the form of caste system and dalits? Vokkaligas and Brahmins are biggest culprits (and beneficiaries) in the past and even in the present. Can you popularize that too?

  3. ShivaG says:

Absolotely unathenticatied wailings and howlings have no place in decent publications- ask the author to submit some valid independently verifiable proof

  4. AZTEC says:

History is unkind to Tipu Sultan

    1. Tipu Sulatn was the first to ban the consumption of alcohol in the entire State, not on religious grounds, but on moral and health grounds. He went to the extent of saying: “A total prohibition is very near to my heart.”

    2. Tipu Sultan is credited with introducing missile or rocket technology in war.( a painting of the first use of this technology credited to Tipu exists in NASA and is mentioned by Sri.Abdul Kalam, in his book “wings of fire.”

    3. Tipu was the first to introduce sericulture to the then-Mysore state.

4.Tipu was the first to confiscate the property of upper castes, including Mutts, and distribute it among the Shudras.

    5. Tipu is also credited with sowing the seeds of capitalist development at a time when the country was completely feudal.

    6. Tipu completed the task of establishing a biodiversity garden named Lal Bagh.

    7. Tipu Sultans’ tolerance is reflected in his annual grants to no less than 156 temples, which included land deeds and jewelry.

8.Tipus army was largely composed of Shudras. When the famed Sringeri Mutt, established by Shankaracharya, was invaded by the Maratha army, he issued a firman to provide financial assistance for reinstallation of the holy idol and restoring the tradition of worship at the Mutt. The Sringeri Mutt possesses 47 letters addressed by Tipu Sultan to the then Shankaracharya Sri Sacchidananda Bharati III (1770 – 1814). Dr. A. K. Shastry has in his book ‘The records of the Sringeri Dharmasamsthana’, translated and commented upon these letters.
These letters are important not only because they record Tipu’s deep affection for the Mutt and the then Shankaracharya but also because some of the letters bring out important facets of Tipu’s character hitherto not seen or discussed earlier.

9.Tipu sultans donation to the famous Srikanteshwara temple at Nanjangud; the donation of 10,000 gold coins to complete temple work at Kanchi; settling the disputes between two sects of priests at the Melkote temple; and gifts are well known.
Tipu gifted a pachche linga adorned with makara kanti haara to the temple. The kanti haara has a dollar with the symbol of moon, an Islamic symbol. It is kept at the strong room of the temple and put on the idol once in a year on the day of Girijakalayam in the month of Ashada. It is even said that he had gifted land at Chandegaala in Srirangapatna taluk for the money required for daily abhisheka, pooja and others to the Pachche linga.

10.Tipu was also instrumental in constructing the first-ever church in Mysuru. Incidentally, well-known historian B.A. Saletore calls him “defender of Hindu Dharma”.
The allegation of forcible conversions has to be seen in the background of political exigencies — either they were with the colonialists such as in the case of Christians of Dakshina Kannada, or were waging a protracted guerrilla war as in the case of Coorg. Here, historians have distorted the facts by reducing political exigencies to the “communal ideology” of Tipu.

Tipu, a man who ruled for just 16 years continues to haunt Hindutva groups obviously means that Tipu continues to exist in the political discourses, political narratives as well as in the imagination of nation-building. This is where the irony of history lies …
