Lions West to host two-day fund-raiser event to aid subsidised dialysis for the poor and needy

By Sujata Rajpal

Joy through Service, states the tagline of Lions Club of Mysore West (LCMW). True to its motto, the city’s premier service organisation has been spreading joy through its service activities since 1981 when forty like-minded individuals came forward to form an organisation called Lions Club of Mysore West. They were leading Entrepreneurs, senior Corporates, Doctors, Lawyers and other professionals, who were driven by the passion to bring a change and do something meaningful for the society.

Apart from other service activities, it runs a CBSE School. Situated in Gokulam, every brick, every block of the Lions Sevanikethan School was built from funds generated from public.

In 2008, a Kidney Endowment Fund was established in conjunction with Mission Hospital, Mysuru, to help the poor renal failure patients through subsidised dialysis.  So far, more than 10,000 dialysis have been organised through this programme.

Asha Kirana, the AIDS hospital situated at Hebbal, was initially started as a project of this prestigious Club before it became a full-fledged hospital for AIDS care and protection. The international organisation, which has lived up to its mission of ‘We Serve,’ also organises health camps in the slums and provides financial assistance to the underprivileged students.

Until last year, the funds for the organisation’s various service projects were chiefly raised by its annual cracker sale during Diwali. But as the chorus for environment protection grew louder and clearer, the Club decided to discontinue the cracker sale and initiated an alternative fund-raiser called Wellness & Health.

Encouraged by its overwhe-lming response, the organisation has now made the wellness event as its annual fund-raiser. About 3,000 people participated in the two-day inaugural event last year which helped the Club to generate Rs. 5 lakh for its kidney endowment fund thus making it possible for the organisation to provide dialysis facilities to a large number of patients.

The second edition of Wellness & Health will be held on Nov. 11, 12 in Mysuru. Aimed at creating awareness about the importance of mind, body and soul, the two-day mega event will have Walkathon, Yogathon, yoga workshops, free Medical and eye check-up camps.

Besides the wellness sessions, a musical nite will be conducted at MMC&RI Platinum Jubilee Hall in J.K. Grounds.

The wellness market and garage sale are the other highlights of the event. To be held at Sevanikethan School in Gokulum, the proceeds generated from the event will be directed towards the Kidney endowment fund, a flagship service project of the organisation.

Market and Medical Check-up Camp will be inaugurated by Mysore-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha on Nov. 11 at 9.30 am and Walk/Run will be flagged off by MLA Vasu on 12th morning at 6.30 am. The Cycle Treasure Hunt will be flagged off by City Police Commissioner Dr. A. Subrahmanyeswara Rao. Around 4,000 people are expected to participate in this event.

“We are targeting at raising about rupees six lakhs from this event. I am sure like the previous year, this year too Mysuru public will come forward to participate for this cause. Apart from generating funds for our service projects, the event is aimed at creating awareness about wellness and health of body, mind and soul which is the essence of human life,” says, Jacob Paul, President, Lions Club of Mysore West.
